Chicken Diaries -- Part 1

Chicken Diaries – Part 1

It all started with the Coop.  It led to seven baby chicks spending eight weeks in my guest room shower, discovering that a heat lamp really can melt plastic, seven chicks means a lot of chicken poop, heartbreak when two grow into roosters, and discovering that chickens really can make great pets.  But I am getting ahead of myself.

Back to the Coop.  Nick Damner is the owner and founder of Modern Cabana – a S.F. based company that makes beautiful modern prefab buildings – all to the latest environmental standards.  They also happen to make a green roofed dog house that you may have seen in Sunset magazine.  Nick and I were talking last January when our conversation turned to backyard chickens.  Backyard chickens are the obvious next step in the local food movement…but not everyone wants a farm in their backyard.  What if Nick could design an urban chic Modern Cabana chicken coop for us city dwellers who wanted chickens but didn’t want to give up style?  He was already making the dog house – why not?

Six months later, Nick brought the Coop to its debut Backyard Chicken Weekend at Magic Gardens in Berkley.  It was beautiful.  Modern lines, green roof, simple sleek design – it was a huge hit.   As Nick was leaving he added that there was one caveat – the Coop was a beta and I had to take it home and try it out.  A week later there were seven baby chicks in my guest room shower...
