Frost is on it's way and our citrus trees and over-wintering salad greens need protection from winter's destructive tempatures. One of my favorite ways to protect my meyer lemon and bearss lime trees is to use Christmas tree lights.
Wrap a string of lights around the trunk of your citrus tree. Then when frost is predicted, simply plug in the lights and cover the tree with a frost blanket or piece of burlap.
It is also important that all of the plants in your garden are well watered when frost is predicted. Mother Nature usually takes care of this in the form of rain -- but if this last year has taught us anything -- it is that our typical weather patterns are changing. So, if we have a dry spell this winter and frost is predicted -- run your irrigation.
